DESCRIPTION
File 12: The End is an X-Files VHS tape released in 1998, which contains the season finale from season 5: The End.
The End (Season 5, Episode 20) is a pivotal episode in The X-Files series that serves as the season finale and sets the stage for the The X-Files movie and the events of Season 6. It brings together key characters and escalates the ongoing conflict between Mulder, Scully, and the shadowy forces behind the conspiracy.
"The End" Synopsis
In "The End," FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are drawn into a high-stakes case involving a young boy named Gibson Praise, who possesses extraordinary psychic abilities. Gibson can read minds and is seemingly able to anticipate events before they happen. The FBI becomes involved when a sharpshooter attempts to assassinate Gibson during a chess match in Vancouver, but the boy narrowly escapes harm.
The attempt on Gibson's life brings Mulder and Scully back to Washington, D.C., where they are joined by members of the Syndicate, including the Cigarette Smoking Man, who see Gibson as a potential key to unlocking the secrets of human and alien genetics. The Syndicate believes that Gibson's abilities could be the result of a genetic connection to extraterrestrial life, making him a valuable asset in their plans.
As Mulder and Scully protect Gibson, they face increasing opposition from within the FBI, particularly from Assistant Director Alvin Kersh, who is intent on shutting down the X-Files division. Meanwhile, Scully uncovers evidence that Gibson's unique abilities could be linked to the mysterious alien DNA that has been at the heart of the government's secret experiments. Mulder, convinced that Gibson is proof of alien contact, sees him as the ultimate evidence in his quest to expose the truth.
However, the stakes are raised when the Syndicate orders an arson attack on the X-Files office, resulting in the destruction of all of Mulder and Scully's files and evidence. This devastating blow puts Mulder and Scully at a severe disadvantage, as they are left without the resources or documentation to continue their work.
The episode ends on a dramatic note, with the X-Files shut down, the office burned, and the future of Mulder and Scully's investigation uncertain. The Cigarette Smoking Man is shown leaving the burning building, satisfied with his victory, as Mulder and Scully face an uncertain future.
"The End" is a crucial episode in the series, marking the conclusion of the show's fifth season and setting the stage for major developments in the series, including the transition to The X-Files feature film and the shift in the show's mythology that would follow in subsequent seasons.
