Being the star of one of the most iconic science fiction programs in the history of television does not necessarily make you a fan of the genre.
Duchovny has never made a secret of the fact that he does not, unlike his television counterpart Fox Mulder, savor stories of a “certain paranormal bouquet”. He shut down any possibility of wanting to believe in a 2015 interview he gave to
The Late Late Show when he stated in no uncertain terms, “…the answer is: no and never!”
More recently, Desiree Savage of the
Illawarra Mercury (via
Fansided) caught up with David and he had this to say when asked about his anti-sci-fi leanings, “I’m not a superhero comic book guy”. Despite his Scully-level skepticism of the paranormal, he doesn’t seem to feel that his lack of belief affects how he plays Mulder. He further makes his case by saying, “I always approached it (
The X-Files) as a drama or sometimes as a comedy, to me that’s what it is and the elements of science fiction just add to the drama.”
What’s more surprising, and maybe even a little humorous to us fans, is that David assumed everyone felt the same way he did when he signed up for
The X-Files. He further explained, “I wasn’t a fan of science fiction so I actually assumed most of the world was like me, I was wrong. Twenty-five years ago … we would have been a dark horse or kind of a niche show, now everything else is niche.”
The thing that placed
The X-Files ahead of the rest has always been its diversity; some viewers are attracted to the show for the alien mythology, some for the monsters of the week, and some for the political thriller. David might make it clear that he holds little credence in the unexplainable, but I would be lying if I said I weren’t just a tad curious about his thoughts on government conspiracies.
