Staying with Scully

Chapter one Scully by his side…

Agent Doggett stepped out of Mulder’s hospital room after seeing him and Scully together and sighed as he sat down on the chair outside.
He held his head in his hands, trying to think about how he felt about Scully now that Mulder looked to be on the road to recovery. Was it too late for him to tell her how he felt? He thought so. He should have told her earlier before he was distracted by the man dressed in black.
“Agent Doggett?” a familiar voice asked. Doggett looked up to see AD Skinner looking down at him. “Seat taken?” Skinner asked as he gestured to the empty seat next to Doggett who shrugged. “No. Go ahead Sir,” he told him before Skinner sat down.
“How are they?” Skinner wanted to know. Doggett sighed. “They’re okay. Mulder’s woken up and Scully’s bringing him up to speed on everything’s that happened,” Doggett told Skinner. Skinner nodded. “I heard you turned down Kersh’s offer of a promotion,” he told Doggett who nodded and sighed. “Why did you do it?” Skinner asked. “I don’t know. I guess I couldn’t leave Scully,” Doggett told him.
“Leave Scully? She will be fine. You worry about her too much you know Agent Doggett. You had a great opportunity. I hope you realise you may never get out of the X Files office now,” Skinner said gently. Doggett nodded. “I know the consequences of my actions sir but I stand by what I’ve done. I’ve found Mulder, so what? There’s still a lot of questions that need answering, and loose ends to tie up. There’s still work to be done sir and I won’t clock out until it’s all done,” Doggett answered. Skinner nodded.
“Just so you know, from my experience, is that nothing on the X Files is resolved exactly,” he said. “You’ll have a lot more work on your hands,” Skinner told him. “All the more reason to stay with Scully. She’s going to need all the help she can get, especially with her maternity leave starting soon,” Doggett insisted stubbornly.
Skinner sighed and nodded. “Sir?” Doggett asked suddenly. “Yes Agent Doggett?” Skinner asked. “You’ve worked with Agent Mulder. What’s he like to work with?” Doggett wanted to know. Skinner let out a small chuckle. “Stubborn. Just like you,” he told him. “He won’t take no for an answer and he is obsessed with his work.
He’s a bit of a loose cannon and a black sheep, but he’s also very smart. I think you will be okay working with him,” Skinner said as he patted Agent Doggett on the shoulder before standing up and leaving. Doggett watched him go. Just then the door to Mulder’s hospital room opened and Agent Dana Scully stepped out. “Agent Doggett?” She asked. “You can see us now,” she told him as she held the door open. Doggett nodded and lead her back into the room before Scully closed the door behind them.

Chapter two Unexpected news from Doggett

Agent Doggett sat a little uncomfortably in his seat by Mulder’s right side while Scully smiled as she sat in her chair to Mulder’s left and held his hand. It appeared Mulder was sleeping so Scully and Doggett whispered between them.
“What happens now Agent Scully?” Doggett wanted to know. “How do you mean?” Scully whispered back. “I guess Mulder will want to come back to the X Files right? I want you to know Dana, I’ve turned down the offer of promotion from Kersh. I’m staying down in the basement with you and Mulder,” Doggett told her quietly. Scully sighed and frowned.
“Are you crazy Agent Doggett? You realise you’ll be stuck down there forever,” Scully warned him. Doggett nodded. “I know. Skinner just told me. But I wanna help Dana. I know you’ll be on maternity leave soon and you need all the help you can get before Mulder comes back,” Doggett told her. Scully nodded.
“Well thank you Agent Doggett. Speaking of Mulder, I’m going to stay here tonight with him,” Scully whispered. “Do you need a ride back in the morning?” Doggett asked her quietly. “I don’t know yet but thank you for asking John. You can go home now if you want, I’ll get a ride back from Skinner tomorrow,” Scully told him with a grateful smile. Doggett nodded and smiled back. “Sure thing. Take care Dana. I’ll have the X Files office ready and waiting for you to come back with Mulder,” Doggett replied before getting up and leaving the room with one last look at Mulder.

Chapter three New partnership

AD Skinner shook his head as he stood at the hospitals reception. He was giving the nurse all of Mulder’s details and career history. He still couldn’t believe that Mulder was alive again and coming back to the X Files. Now all they had to do was wait for Mulder to recover and then he could bring Scully and Mulder home.
Skinner felt good that he was able to save Mulder and that it worked out for everyone in the end. Well, almost everyone, Skinner thought as he saw Agent Doggett approach him from the corridor. Skinner felt sorry for the younger agent, what with Scully being reunited with Mulder. Now Doggett would have to work alone.
Skinner finished with providing the nurse with Mulder’s information, excused himself and sat next to Doggett who was sitting in the waiting room. “I’ve just called Mrs Scully,” Doggett told his boss. Skinner nodded. “Listen Agent Doggett. I’m going to give you a new partner to work with," Skinner told him. Doggett looked up in surprise. “Oh?” He asked. Skinner nodded.
“You remember Agent Reyes don’t you? I understand you have worked together before,” Skinner said. Doggett swallowed a lump in his throats and looked down at the floor for a moment as he regained his composure.
“Yes sir we did,” he managed to say as he remembered that terrible last case he had on with Agent Reyes. “Well we are thinking that due to her background in ritualistic crime, we decided to begin the process of moving her more permanently to the X Files unit. We feel she will be a great asset to the team,” Skinner explained. Doggett nodded.
“She was a good partner when I worked with her,” Doggett mused. He felt better now that he had a partner and someone to help him with running the X Files office while Agent Mulder recovers with Scully by his side.
“Thank you sir,” Doggett said and Skinner nodded before they began to wait for further news of Mulder.

Chapter four The start of a beautiful friendship…

Agent Reyes surveyed the X Files office with a critical eye. She was there for the day- a quick visit so she could get used to her surroundings of her future job. She was ecstatic to be offered the job, and so naturally she said yes straight away.
She didn’t care about the long journey she needed to travel from New Orleans to Washington- it was all worth it.
Reyes eagerly looked at the X Files cabinet and wondered what sort of cases filled it. “Hey,” a familiar voice said behind her. She grinned as she turned around to see Agent Doggett standing at the doorway of the office as he took his jacket off.
“Hey yourself,” Reyes replied and Doggett grinned back at her. “What brings you here Monica?” Doggett asked as he sat down at Mulder’s desk. Reyes shrugged. “Just checking out the new digs I guess,” she said. Doggett nodded. “I don’t suppose I can read the X Files cases for the next couple of days at all? I just want to get an idea of the sort of things the X Files deals with,” she said. Doggett nodded.
“Sure, go ahead. Be my guest. You know Monica, when I first started here I read through all the Files myself- I spent the weekend going through them and let me tell you, there are a hell of stuff in there that’ll make your hair stand on end,” he told her as she picked out a couple of Files and sat down at the small desk near Agent Doggett to read them.
“Thanks John, Ill keep that in mind. What’re you gonna do while I read these?” Reyes asked.
Doggett shrugged. “Wait till Scully gets back I guess so she can pack up and you’ll move in,” he told her.
Reyes nodded. “I’ll get reading,” she said with a smile, and the two shared a friendly silence as Reyes started her work and Doggett began typing up the report on Mulder.
