 SUMMARY

Frank wakes up in a hospital with no memory of the past few days and discovers he's connected to a secret experiment involving mind control and psychotropic drugs. As he retraces his steps, Frank uncovers a government conspiracy and the potential for profound ethical violations in scientific research.

 STORY

"Walkabout" is a tense and mysterious episode of Millennium that delves into the darker recesses of the human psyche, exploring the themes of memory, identity, and the sometimes blurred line between sanity and madness. The episode follows Frank Black as he faces a personal and professional crisis that forces him to question everything he knows about himself and his work.

The episode begins with Frank waking up in a seedy motel room, disoriented and confused. He has no memory of how he got there, and his personal belongings, including his wallet and gun, are missing. Frank soon discovers that he has been missing for two days, with no recollection of what happened during that time. Disturbed by the memory lapse, he contacts his friend and colleague, Peter Watts, at the Millennium Group for help.

As Frank retraces his steps, he learns that he checked himself into a clinic that specializes in extreme psychological therapies, particularly for those suffering from trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. The clinic, which operates on the fringes of accepted medical practices, offers a radical form of therapy known as "walkabout," where patients voluntarily relinquish their memories and identities to confront the deepest parts of their psyche.

Frank is shocked to discover that he willingly participated in this dangerous experiment, hoping to gain insights into the mind of a killer he had been investigating. The killer, known only as the "Polaroid Stalker," had been sending Frank disturbing images and taunting him for months, pushing Frank to the edge of his mental and emotional endurance. Desperate to understand the mind of his tormentor, Frank sought out the walkabout therapy to immerse himself in the psychology of his adversary.

As Frank digs deeper into his lost time, he uncovers a series of disturbing events that took place while he was under the influence of the clinic's experimental treatments. He learns that during his walkabout, he encountered a man named Daniel, a former patient who had become unhinged after undergoing the same therapy. Daniel, believing he had been "reborn" through the therapy, saw himself as a messianic figure with a mission to cleanse the world of evil by any means necessary.

Frank's investigation leads him to a harrowing realization: while he was under the influence of the therapy, Daniel had used Frank's vulnerability to manipulate him into participating in a series of violent and dangerous actions, including an attack on the clinic staff and the release of other patients into the public. The details of these actions remain hazy in Frank's memory, but he is haunted by the possibility that he may have been complicit in Daniel's crimes.

The episode reaches its climax when Frank confronts Daniel, who has become increasingly delusional and dangerous. In a tense and psychologically charged showdown, Frank must use all of his skills and understanding of human nature to outmaneuver Daniel and prevent him from causing further harm. The confrontation is a battle of wits and willpower, with Frank struggling to maintain control over his fractured sense of self.

Ultimately, Frank manages to subdue Daniel, but the experience leaves him deeply shaken and questioning his own sanity. The episode ends with Frank reflecting on the dangerous path he chose to walk in his quest for understanding, realizing that the mind is a fragile thing and that delving too deeply into darkness can have irreversible consequences.

"Walkabout" is a powerful and unsettling episode that explores the fragility of the human mind and the dangers of losing oneself in the pursuit of knowledge. Through Frank's journey, the episode raises important questions about the ethics of extreme psychological treatments and the risks of blurring the line between patient and investigator. The episode's haunting atmosphere, coupled with its exploration of memory, identity, and the psychological toll of Frank's work, makes "Walkabout" one of the most compelling and introspective episodes of Millennium.

★ ★ ★

An excellent episode that gets off to an extremely strong start, with Frank Black apparently imprisoned in a psychiatric asylum.
This episode shows that MillenniuM can be more than just a weekly crime series.
Mark Snow's soundtrack is the best of the season so far.
