DESCRIPTION
Requiem is an X-Files VHS tape released in 2000.
Requiem (Season 7, Episode 22) and Within (Season 8, Episode 1) and "Without" (Season 8, Episode 2) form a crucial story arc in The X-Files, marking a significant turning point in the series with the departure of Fox Mulder and the introduction of new challenges for Dana Scully and John Doggett.
Requiem
Requiem revisits the site of one of Mulder and Scully’s first cases in Bellefleur, Oregon, where mysterious disappearances and strange phenomena are occurring again. The episode brings the series full circle as Mulder and Scully investigate what seems to be renewed alien activity in the area.
While the local sheriff and his deputy encounter a crashed UFO, Mulder and Scully find themselves at the center of escalating events. Mulder, feeling an intense personal connection to the case and believing it might lead to answers about his lifelong search for the truth, decides to pursue it even though Scully, who is suffering from an unexplained illness, is reluctant.
The episode's climax sees Mulder being abducted by aliens, leaving Scully devastated and pregnant, a development that adds layers of mystery. The episode ends with the poignant realization that Mulder is gone, setting the stage for the changes and challenges that will dominate the next season.
Within
Within picks up immediately after Mulder’s abduction. The FBI launches an official manhunt for Mulder, assigning Agent John Doggett to lead the investigation. Scully, still reeling from Mulder's disappearance and grappling with her pregnancy, initially distrusts Doggett, fearing he may be involved in a cover-up. Doggett, however, is portrayed as a determined and principled investigator who is genuinely trying to find Mulder.
As Scully and Doggett follow leads, they uncover evidence suggesting Mulder’s abduction may have been orchestrated by powerful forces within the government. The search takes them back to Bellefleur, Oregon, where Doggett becomes convinced that Mulder is still alive but hiding. The episode ends with Doggett questioning Scully’s knowledge of Mulder’s disappearance, while Scully remains resolute in her belief that he was abducted.
Without
In Without, the search for Mulder intensifies as Doggett and Scully face off against alien shapeshifters who are determined to keep Mulder hidden. Doggett’s skepticism about alien involvement is challenged as the evidence becomes increasingly difficult to deny. The tension between Doggett’s logical approach and Scully’s belief in the extraordinary defines their dynamic.
The climax of the episode sees Doggett and Scully returning to Bellefleur, where they have a final confrontation with the alien bounty hunter, who is impersonating various people, including Mulder. In the end, they are unable to find Mulder, but the experience brings Doggett and Scully to a tentative understanding.
Without ends with Scully accepting that Mulder is truly gone, but not giving up hope of finding him. The episode establishes Doggett as Scully’s new partner, setting up the direction for Season 8, with Scully now leading the search for Mulder while dealing with her pregnancy and the looming mysteries surrounding it.
These episodes mark a dramatic shift in The X-Files, transitioning the series into a new phase while maintaining its core themes of mystery, government conspiracy, and the pursuit of the truth.
