Manners began his career in the entertainment industry at a young age, inspired by his father, Sam Manners, a well-known television producer. He started as an assistant director and quickly moved up the ranks, directing episodes for a variety of popular TV shows in the 1980s, including Charlie’s Angels and 21 Jump Street.

His unique vision and ability to bring out nuanced performances from actors helped cement The X-Files as a cultural phenomenon. His contributions were not limited to directing; he also served as an executive producer in the later seasons, helping to guide the overall direction of the series.

After The X-Files, Manners joined Supernatural in its first season as both a director and executive producer. His influence was crucial in establishing the show's tone and visual style, which contributed to its long-running success. He directed some of the most memorable episodes of Supernatural, endearing himself to fans and cast members alike.
