DESCRIPTION
File 7: Tunguska is an X-Files VHS released in 1997 and containing two X-Files episodes from season 4: Tunguska and Terma.
The two-part The X-Files episodes "Tunguska" (Season 4, Episode 8) and "Terma" (Season 4, Episode 9) are crucial entries in the series' mythology, delving into the global conspiracy involving the mysterious "black oil" and its connection to extraterrestrial life.
"Tunguska" Synopsis
In "Tunguska," FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully investigate the mysterious origins of a deadly substance smuggled into the United States. Their inquiry begins when a courier is caught with a briefcase containing a rock from outer space, which oozes a black, oil-like substance. This substance, known as the "black oil," has a history tied to an explosion in Tunguska, Russia, in 1908. Mulder's investigation leads him to a U.S. State Department official with Russian ties, who directs him to a shadowy figure named Krycek. Mulder and Krycek travel to Russia, where they are captured and taken to a prison camp. There, Mulder witnesses prisoners being exposed to the black oil as part of a horrific experiment. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, with Mulder imprisoned and exposed to the dangerous substance.
"Terma" Synopsis
The story continues in "Terma," with Mulder struggling to survive his imprisonment in Russia while Scully works to uncover the truth back in the United States. In Russia, Mulder escapes the prison camp with the help of fellow prisoners, but not before learning about a group of Russian dissidents who are immune to the black oil due to a crude vaccine. Back in the U.S., Scully testifies before a Senate subcommittee about the existence of a global conspiracy involving the black oil and its potential use as a bioweapon. The conspiracy appears to involve powerful figures in both the American and Russian governments. As Mulder makes his way back to the U.S., Scully and the Lone Gunmen uncover a plot to spread the black oil through contaminated rocks. The episode concludes with Mulder returning safely but without conclusive evidence, while the conspirators destroy the remaining evidence to keep their plans hidden.
These episodes deepen the mythology of The X-Files, introducing the black oil as a key element in the series' ongoing exploration of extraterrestrial life and government conspiracies, while raising the stakes for Mulder and Scully in their quest for the truth.
