Twenty-five years ago, on a relatively recent broadcast network called Fox (founded in 1986), viewers discovered a new TV series. Titled [url=https://www.tvore.com/?page=series&id=1]The X-Files, the series told the story of two FBI Agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, investigating paranormal cases in the search for the truth.
At a time where social media did not exist, the ratings were not great and the feedback minimum, but the series slowly started to create a following until it reached and became a worldwide phenomenon a couple of years after, culminating with the release of a multi-million eponymous Hollywood movie, often referred by fans as [url=https://www.tvore.com/?page=movie&id=22]Fight the Future.
Today, The X-Files is made of eleven seasons, two feature films, a spin-off series ([url=https://www.tvore.com/?page=series&id=47]The Lone Gunmen) and a big list of merchandising products, from apparels to books and even audio episodes.
Not only that, but some of the crew from The X-Files actively continue to work today. For instance, even tonight, a new episode from [url=https://www.tvore.com/?page=series&id=19]Better Call Saul will air. Fans of The X-Files know all about [url=https://www.tvore.com/?page=star&id=16]Vince Gilligan and his groundbreaking success with the critically acclaimed series [url=https://www.tvore.com/?page=series&id=2]Breaking Bad. Better Call Saul writer [url=https://www.tvore.com/?page=star&id=22]Thomas Schnauz recently explained on Twitter that the way they craft an episode came from the way they used to work on The X-Files, with multiple yellow cards summarizing the episode.
The X-Files was released in an era where TV was considered a sub-culture. Production quality was not a major concern for most of the series at the time. What is interesting is that today, many actors are saying that the real work is taking place in the field of TV series, whereas the movie industry became very stereotyped - most of the Hollywood major films being films about superheroes. Netflix is just one example of the vast success of TV series in today's society.
Meanwhile, politically, some argue that The X-Files has become irrelevant. Some could argue exactly the opposite. Because, in a way, today's society has become what The X-Files was about. World leaders are giving new meanings to the truth. Truths are referred as in-genuine news. Perception has become reality. Elections are made from shadow government agencies from abroad and, as Fox Mulder would say, "we've never been in more danger."
What would Fox Mulder do in today's world? Would anyone listen? Or would he be called upon and ridiculed?
Once thing is certain, the truth is out there, and always will be.
